Brothers Guha and Karthik Bala lead Velan Ventures, Inc. an innovation investment company with a focus on games and game related technology companies.
Previously, Guha and Karthik co-founded Vicarious Visions in 1991 while both were in high school. VV has since grown to become an industry-leading game developer, helping to shape popular culture around the world. In 2005, the Balas sold Vicarious Visions to Activision|Blizzard (NASDAQ: ATVI). VV games have generated over $4 Billion in retail sales and over 50 million software units sold worldwide. Hit video game titles from VV include versions of Skylanders, Guitar Hero, Crash Bandicoot, Tony Hawk, Spider-Man, and Marvel Ultimate Alliance for various platforms. VV’s numerous awards for critical acclaim include the BAFTA, Nickelodeon Parent’s Choice, and numerous Game of the Year awards.
After leading Vicarious Visions for 25 years, the brothers transitioned out of the company to become entrepreneurs again. Both brothers enjoy mentoring entrepreneurs and start-up ventures. They were honored as Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s “Entrepreneurs of the Year” in 2013.
